Google Education: school gems

The other day I participated in a training with math and physics teachers from Natick, MA. They are going 1-to-1 with Mac laptops. I asked them what software they will be using most and they said Google apps. When I thought about Google uses in the classroom Search, Earth, and Docs came right to mind. But I wanted to see what else is out there.

A must see is YouTube for schools, videos geared for education. Plus related videos are cut out which means avoiding the extremely embarrassing and potentially damaging profane video on the side of the screen. Another useful tool is Google Sites. With a bit of planning and digitizing your existing curriculum you can put together some slick web experiences such as this Survivor Simulation. Two other gems worth mentioning is the Google Science Fair which is a gigantic online competition and Google Translate. I just added the translate widget to my blog and it took me a while to get back to writing this because it was ridiculously cool to see what I wrote in French or Korean.
